School of Artificial Intelligence

History

BNU School of Artificial Intelligence was established in June 2019. The talent training and scientific research of the school's information discipline began with the development of radio-electronics specialty, computing technology specialty and a computer factory in 1958. It is a discipline developing synchronously with China's information technology.  In 1998, the College of Information Science was established on the basis of the computer science majors of the former departments of Radio-Electronics, Information Technology and Management and Mathematics.  In 2005, the school was reorganized and renamed as the College of Information Science and Technology, which was an important talent training base for computer and electronic disciplines in China.

Discipline Development

Over half a century of development, Beijing Normal University's information discipline has become a comprehensive, research-oriented and unique training base of Beijing Normal University for engineering talents in the information age. Academicians Wang Cheng, Ling Yongshun and Liu Shanghe of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in the information field are all our outstanding alumni. Beijing Normal University's computer science and information system specialty ranked 254th in 2017 QS World University Ranking. The school has scientific research laboratories such as the Institute of Information Interchange and Intelligent Computing, the Information Processing Laboratory, the Institute of Virtual Reality and Visualization Technology, the Chinese Information Processing Laboratory, the Big Data Mining and Knowledge Engineering Laboratory, the Spatial Information Processing and Analysis Laboratory, the Intelligent Computing and Software Research Center, and the Graphic Image and Pattern Recognition Laboratory.

Faculty

In recent years, the school has developed an excellent faculty team with a reasonable structure by strengthening teacher training and introducing outstanding talents from home and abroad. Of the more than 60 faculty and staff members now, there is one professor in the Thousand Talent Program, four talents of the Ministry of Education New Century Talents, one winner from the National Natural Science Foundation of China's Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, and more than 83% of full-time teachers having doctorates. Two teachers have won the Baosteel Outstanding Teachers Award, two teachers have won the Qian Yuan Award, some teachers have won the Award of Advanced Teachers in Beijing. In addition, teachers have won the first prize of the BNU Basic Teaching Skills Competition many times, the BNU "Top 10 Teachers Most Popular with Undergraduates" and "the BNU "Top 10 Teachers Most Popular with Undergraduates" and "Top 10 Teachers Most Popular with Postgraduates".

Degree Programs

The school has two undergraduate majors, "computer science and technology" and "electronic information science and technology"; four second-level Master's programs: computer software and theory, computer application technology, communication and information system, and signal and information processing; one "computer science and technology" post-doctoral research center, and a doctoral program on "computer science and technology" first-level discipline, "computer software and theory" and "computer application technology".

Research Achievements

The school has rich teaching and research achievements, covering seven key technologies of artificial intelligence technology, namely machine learning, mapping knowledge domain, natural language processing, human-computer interaction, computer vision, biometric identification, virtual reality and augmented reality. In the recent five years, the school has undertaken influential research projects such as national key research and development plans in the Period of the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan”, projects supported by the state programs, "863" high-tech projects, key projects and overseas cooperation projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, and key projects in the Beijing Municipal Natural Science Foundation. More than 100 papers have been published in SCI journals such as NEUROIMAGE, and a number of influential and high-level academic papers in TOP zones have emerged.  The school has won more than 10 provincial and ministerial honors, including the National Science Progress Award, the National Teaching Achievement Award, the Beijing Municipal Teaching Achievement Award and the Ministry of Education's Science and Technology Progress Award.

International Exchange

The school has been actively carrying out domestic and international cooperation in talent training. It has established cooperation with Cardiff University and Dublin University in the training of master's and dual-degree student, and has jointly developed network synchronous video courses such as Introduction to Computer Science, Digital Image Processing, Fundamentals of Compiling and Digital Signal Processing with Southampton University and Manchester University. In addition, foreign professors are invited from universities such as the University of Pennsylvania, Texas University and Cardiff University to teach English courses. The school has hosted many international conferences such as the CAA International Academic Conference and the Internet of Things Conference, and about 80% of the teachers are sent abroad to be visiting scholars, to pursue advanced studies or participate in international conferences every year.
