The First Gender-Transformative Digital Education Training Held in Ghana

From January 6 to 9, 2026, the first Gender-Transformative Digital Education Training was held in Ghana. This training is an integral part of the Beijing Normal University-UNESCO Project for Digital Skills for Girls in Africa, jointly launched by Beijing Normal University and UNESCO in October 2024. It aims to enhance gender awareness among information and communications technology (ICT) teacher trainers and pre-service teachers, to foster an inclusive atmosphere in ICT classrooms, advancing gender equality in digital education.

The training was jointly organised by the UNESCO International Research and Training Centre for Rural Education (UNESCO INRULED), the China-Africa Teacher Education Center, UNESCO Headquarters, UNESCO Office in Accra, and the Ghana Ministry of Education. A total of 29 teacher trainers from across Ghana participated and completed the program.

This training adopts a gender-transformative approach to digital education, aiming not just to close gaps in access but to shift the gendered norms and power dynamics that limit girls’ participation. It empowers educators to use inclusive pedagogies, challenge stereotypes, and create safe and engaging spaces for all learners. Participants are supported in identifying biases, integrating gender perspectives into lesson planning, and promoting equitable participation. Upon completion, the participants will deliver this training to pre-service teachers in their respective institutions this year.
