2025 Summer Programs of the School of International Chinese Language Education Have Come to an End

During the summer vacation of 2025, the School of International Chinese Language Education of Beijing Normal University(BNU) held over 20 summer programs on Chinese language learning. A total of more than 600 teachers and students from 9 countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea and Italy participated in the studies and successfully completed the programs.

The students mainly come from many foreign partner universities such as Princeton University in the United States, Damus University in the United States, Tufts University in the United States, William & Mary in the United States, Oberlin University in the United States, University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the United States, University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, Tokyo Gakugei University in Japan, Women's University in Japan, and University of Macerata in Italy. The School of International Chinese Language Education leverages its disciplinary strengths to carry out projects that have helped students improve their Chinese proficiency, practice traditional Chinese talents, and deepen their understanding and recognition of Chinese culture and China's development. Meanwhile, the activities such as teaching interaction between Chinese and foreign youth and group visits set up in the summer courses have effectively promoted communication and understanding between Chinese and foreign youth.

BNU actively promotes cooperation with American institutions and facilitates exchanges between Chinese and American youth. This summer vacation, teachers and students from over ten American institutions came to BNU to study Chinese and experience Chinese culture. Among them, Princeton University in the United States has been cooperating with BNU for over 30 years, and Damus University in the United States has been cooperating with BNU for over 40 years. The relevant programs have become exemplary models of exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States in the field of Chinese language education.

This year, a total of 100 students from Princeton University, Yale University, Stanford University, Columbia University and other institutions participated in the program of Princeton In Beijing, and 40 teachers and students majoring in International Chinese Education from BNU and other institutions were involved in the teaching work of the program. During the eight-week period, the students engaged in "immersive" intensive Chinese learning, fully immersing themselves in Chinese language learning and experiencing Chinese culture. Not only did their Chinese proficiency improve rapidly, but they also deepened their understanding of Chinese culture and society.

The intercollegiate exchange between Damus University in the United States and BNU is one of the earliest and longest-lasting educational exchange programs between China and the United States. This year, a total of 23 teachers and students participated in the Damus University project. During the two-month Chinese learning period, the students of Damus University made significant progress in language skills and cultural cognition through grammar analysis in class, real communication in life, theoretical study at cultural lectures, and personal experience from field trips.

The School of International Chinese Language Education began hosting the online summer camp of the "Mandarin Excellence Programme" in 2022 and hosted its first offline event in 2024. This year's summer camp, building on past experiences, once again allowed the British students participating in the program to experience Chinese culture firsthand, using the Chinese language as a bond to connect the deep friendship between the people of China and the UK. Fifty-four teachers and students from Dartford Grammar School and Highdown School & Sixth Form in the UK completed an 11-day trip to Beijing, China, during which they also had in-depth exchanges with the teachers and students of Beijing No. 11 School.

Other Chinese learning programs also have their own unique features. In various projects, the students have all improved their Chinese proficiency, witnessed the modern vitality of Beijing, and felt the charm of Chinese culture.

In addition, the School of International Chinese Language Education of BNU has also hosted two training programs for local Chinese language teachers overseas. The two programs met the career development needs of Chinese language teachers in Europe and America, enhanced the teaching level and ability of local Chinese language teachers in both regions, and contributed to the sustainable development of international Chinese language education in Europe and America.

This year's summer vacation has come to an end. The School of International Chinese Language Education will continue to deepen and strengthen cooperation in the future, and at the same time actively expand more new international summer Chinese language learning programs to continuously enhance the international influence of BNU in the field of international Chinese language education.
