The final of the 2023 "French Science Festival – My Thesis in 3 Minutes" competition held at BNU
On November 15, the final of the 2023 "French Science Festival - My Thesis in 3 Minutes" competition was held at Yingdong Academic Hall of Beijing Normal University. The event was organized by the French Embassy in China and co-organized by Beijing Normal University with the support of the Ministry of Education of China.
Mr. Chen Jie, Vice Minister of Education of China, Mr. Ma Jun, President of Beijing Normal University, and Mr. Bertrand Lortholary, Ambassador of France to China, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Mo Yan, Nobel Laureate in Literature and Director of the International Writing Centre of Beijing Normal University, Chen Wei, Deputy Director General of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education of China, Wang Ming, Vice President of Beijing Normal University, and Nicolas Pillerel, Minister-Counselor for Cultural, Educational and Scientific Affairs of the Embassy of France in Beijing, and other guests attended the event.
During the final round, eight contestants presented their research topics in Chinese or French in three minutes, covering a wide range of fields such as language and literature, physics, architecture, biology, geology and so on. The judging panel consisted of six intramural and extramural experts. After a fierce competition, the "Best Eloquence Award", "Best Science Popularization Award", "Sino-French Ties Award" and "Most Popular Award" were presented respectively. Mr. Wang Ming, Vice President of BNU, and Mr. Marc DAUMAS, presented the prizes to the winners.
During the intermission, students from the Beijing Normal University Student Art Troupe gave a wonderful performance for the audience.
At the end of the competition, the Chairman of the Jury, Liu Min, Deputy Director of International Exchange and Cooperation Department of Beijing Normal University and Xavier ANTOINE, Science and Technology Attaché of the French Embassy in Beijing, on behalf of the organizers of the event, expressed their gratitude to the contestants for their wonderful performances and the staff for their long-term preparations. The competition came to an end with warm applause.
The 2023 "French Science Festival - My Thesis in 3 Minutes" competition is an significant event based on the "Sino-French high-level dialogue mechanism on people-to-people exchanges". The competition invited doctoral students in various fields to present their research topics in Chinese or French in 180 seconds through engaging stories and plain expressions. Since its launch in July this year, the competition has attracted more than 50 contestants from all over the country, and finally 8 contestants from 5 divisions (Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shanghai, Shenyang) made it to the final.
