Youthful Ingenuity Ignites the AI Future — Yuanzhuo Initiatives Casebook Published, Chinese Teenagers' AI Innovations Go Global
The Youth Artificial Intelligence Innovation Initiatives (Yuanzhuo Initiatives), jointly launched by Beijing Normal University (BNU) in partnership with universities, secondary schools, and technology enterprises, has achieved a landmark milestone: the publication of A Collection of AI Innovations by Chinese Teenagers: Discovering Youthful Ingenuity by Springer Nature (2024). The volume presents 10 outstanding AI innovation projects by secondary school students from Beijing, Macao, and beyond, spanning ten thematic areas including environmental protection, industrial inspection, medical diagnosis, and food safety. Through rigorous, real-world case studies, the book demonstrates the remarkable capacity of Chinese teenagers to apply original and innovative algorithms to solve genuine societal challenges — offering a "Chinese model" for global youth AI education.

Yuanzhuo Initiatives: A Visionary Exploration of AI and Youth
The name "YUANZHUO" honors Liu Hong (courtesy name Yuanzhuo), the inventor of the Chinese abacus — embodying originality and excellence. In December 2019, Beijing Normal University launched the Youth Artificial Intelligence Innovation Initiatives in response to the UNESCO Beijing Consensus on Artificial Intelligence and Education (2019), bringing together universities, secondary schools, and technology companies around a central question:
At a time when generative AI had yet to capture global attention, the founding team already recognised that algorithm innovation would be the high ground of future AI competition. The Initiatives set out to foster top-notch innovative youth talent through a pioneering "Course–Community–Camp" tri-modal ecosystem, breaking disciplinary boundaries through cross-institutional collaboration.
Over five years, Yuanzhuo Initiatives has delivered hundreds of public-benefit activities, released 200+ thematic courses, reached nearly 16,000 registered users on its platform, and extended its reach to more than 80 countries and regions, accumulating tens of millions of learning minutes.
Original Algorithms in Action: Real Problems, Real Solutions
The core value of the casebook lies in every project's orientation toward authentic problems. The 10 featured cases were selected through three rounds of evaluation, expert mentorship, and open defence from hundreds of student submissions, spanning ten thematic domains: Ecological Monitoring; Campus Management; Medical Diagnosis; Smart Education; Equipment Monitoring; Industrial Inspection; Smart Agriculture; Smart Home; Elderly Care.
■ Swift Population Monitoring: AI as Guardian of Urban Wildlife
A team from Beijing Academy partnered with the Beijing Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center to develop "A Monitoring System for Migratory Bird Beijing Swift with Object Detection." Leveraging deep learning image processing technology, the system resolved the low efficiency of volunteers' manual annotation of Beijing Swifts, achieving significant results in ecological practice — a vivid example of teenagers' original algorithms serving biodiversity conservation.

Breaking Barriers: An Open Resource Ecosystem for Innovation
The casebook's creation was inseparable from the comprehensive support of the Yuanzhuo Resource Platform (yuanzhuo.bnu.edu.cn) — an open, shared educational resource hub for AI education across K–12 levels:

Cross-Boundary Invitational Learning: A New Paradigm for Collaborative Education
Underpinning the Yuanzhuo Initiatives is the "Cross-Boundary Invitational Learning" framework — an original theoretical contribution by the research team grounded in Third-Generation Activity Theory and Invitational Education Theory, crystallised into an integrated 5P systemic model:

This theory has guided research across multiple regions in China and driven deep international partnerships — including Cambodia — facilitating the global dissemination of Chinese AI education research.
A Tri-Modal Ecosystem: Course · Community · Camp
Yuanzhuo Initiatives connects knowledge acquisition to capability development through its "Course–Community–Camp" model:
■ Courses: Self-developed curricula spanning core AI knowledge and methods, designed using problem-based and project-driven pedagogical approaches. Expert lectures and enterprise case studies are integrated into large-scale blended online–offline courses, equipping students with a systematic knowledge architecture.
■ Community: The Yuanzhuo Community organises hundreds of cross-disciplinary exchange activities, uniting universities, enterprises, and secondary schools in substantive dialogue on curriculum standards, AI algorithms, scientific innovation, and pedagogy, fostering a stable mechanism for cross-boundary collaboration.
■ Camp: Through AIGC-themed summer/winter schools, the Cross-Strait AI Summer Camp, and International AI Olympiad (IOAI) training programmes, students engage in full-cycle practice — from original algorithm design to model construction and real-world deployment — across domains such as environmental protection, healthcare, and industry.
China's AI Education Wisdom on the World Stage
Since its release in 2024, the casebook has been downloaded nearly 1,500 times, becoming a key window through which the global community discovers Chinese youth AI education. Simultaneously, Yuanzhuo Initiatives continues to expand its global footprint:
■ Contributed to the revision of Macao's Information Technology Basic Academic Attainment Requirements for primary, junior and senior secondary education, embedding frontier educational concepts into regional standards.
■ Under the China–Cambodia Aid Programme, developed Grade 10 Information Technology textbooks and trained 300 backbone teachers across five regions, translating Chinese AI education experience into international instructional resources.
■ Partnered with UNESCO to publish the White Paper on AI Education Support Environments for Primary and Secondary Schools Worldwide.
■ Supported Bebras computational thinking community, CTE-STEM 2024, International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence, and the Mainland–Hong Kong Sister Schools Programme, extending the reach of youth AI education across borders.
