On November 18, the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced the results of the co election of academicians in 2021. Chen Songqi, an alumnus of Beijing Normal University, was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Chen Songqi was admitted to the Department of Mathematics of BNU in 1979 and received a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from BNU in 1983; In 1988, he received a master's degree in Mathematical Statistics from BNU; He received a doctorate in statistics from The Australian National University in 1993. He is currently a chair professor of Peking University, chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Statistical Science Center, and former co-founding director of the Statistical Science Center of Peking University (2010-2019).

Chen Songqi's main research interests are ultra-high dimensional big data statistical analysis, environmental statistics, nonparametric statistical methods, etc. He has achieved fruitful results in ultra-high dimensional hypothesis testing methods and nonparametric empirical likelihood methods, which has promoted the key development of statistics. He has won the outstanding research award for teachers of lowa State University, the 7th Li Yining Scientific Research Award, and the first prize of Natural Science of the Ministry of education in 2017. The research results have been highly recognized by peers at home and abroad, and have been selected into the list of the world's top 2% scientists by Stanford University in 2020.

He is now the executive director of the Chinese Statistical Society, the member of the American Association for the advancement of Science, the member of the American Statistical Society, the member of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the Scientific Secretary of Bernoulli Society. He has successively served as the co-editor of Statistics and Its Interface (2010-2013), the editorial board of the Annals of Statistics (2010-2019), the Proceedings of the American Statistical Society (2018-2020) and the Journal of business and Economic Statistics (2018-2020), the executive director of the Council of the International Society of Mathematical Statistics (2016-2019) and the member of the Council of the International Chinese Statistical Society (2008-2009), Advisory Committee member of the National Bureau of Statistics (2017-2020).

Chen Songqi has been concerned about the development of BNU for a long time. In recent years, he has returned to BNU many times to participate in academic activities and served as a consultant to the Statistics Alumni Association of BNU, making important contributions to the development of relevant disciplines.
