“The Song of New China”, a work of “Looking China Youth Film Project” aroused warm response at home and abroad
How was the Chinese National Anthem created? Why is it sung all over the world? Around these topics, the short film "The Song of New China" created by Turkmen girl Grigoryan Kristina has gone viral. The film takes the form of stop-motion animation, tells a history that even Chinese people are not familiar with from the perspective of foreigners, and reviews the behind-the-scenes stories before and after the birth of March of the Volunteers.
The subject of the Chinese National Anthem was originally proposed by the foreign instructor Odet Abadia, who has lived in China for nearly ten years. When she visited a museum, she was deeply attracted by the story of the birth of March of the Volunteers, and told her idea to her student Grigoryan Kristina, a foreign youth director from Shanghai University, and Tian Hongmin, a Chinese producer. The two immediately plunged into the creation, meticulously prepared, repeated ideas, visited many places, collected more than 100,000 characters of text materials, and repaired thousands of pictures. Kristina said: "During the whole process of shooting, I’ve had a fuller understanding of Chinese history. For foreigners, I am half a history expert."
The Song of New China not only tells the birth process of Chinese National Anthem, but also the story of the song went from China to the world. American political activist and famous singer Paul Robertson sang this song in Chinese at an open-air concert. He also produced an English album "Chee Lai Songs of New China" for this song. In the album, "Chee Lai" is a transliteration of "Qi Lai". The album has been highly praised overseas, "Chee Lai" has been widely sung on the world anti-fascist battlefield.
The profound historical heritage and sincere emotional expression of the film have won praise from experts in the industry. Zhu Xinmei, deputy director of the International Institute of the development research center of the State Administration of Radio and Television, pointed out that this short film digs an unknown story of the international dissemination of the Chinese National Anthem and shows the great contribution made by the non-governmental friendly exchanges between China and the United States to world peace during the Second World War. Jiang Weimin, a member of the Organizing Committee of "Looking China Youth Film Project" and the executive director of the Shanghai Vancouver Film School, said that the entire film of "The Song of New China" uses the unique presentation method of stop-motion animation technology to reconstruct the static literature and reproduce the different singing versions of this famous song. Music and pictures, history and reality, freshness and massiness are intertwined into a stirring melody.
The novel and lively form and content of the film have also attracted the attention of netizens, especially the youngsters. Li Zheng, a doctor from Renmin University of China, commented that in the era of war and gunpowder, March of the Volunteers had awakened the hope of countless Chinese people. This short film is widely spread on the Internet and can let more young people understand the spiritual power behind the Chinese National Anthem. Canadian netizen Andrew believes that the short film provides a new perspective for foreign audiences to understand Chinese history in a creative way, which is both interesting and vivid.
