From September 23 to 27, Beijing Normal Univsersity Gallery held the exhibition "BNU Style & Color - joint exhibition of teachers' works from the Department of Fine Arts and Design and the Department of Calligraphy of School of Arts and Communication". The exhibition, jointly planned by the Department of Fine Arts and Design and the Department of Calligraphy of BNU, is a tribute to the 120th anniversary of Beijing Normal University and the 20th anniversary of the school of Arts and Communication.

The participating artists are more than 20 teachers from the Department of Fine Arts and Design and the Department of Calligraphy. They have created nearly 50 excellent works in different forms and styles, including oil painting, Chinese painting, photography, acrylic painting, watercolor, design, sculpture, etc. In these works, the audience can see academic realistic oil painting with rigorous character modeling, abstract and poetic comprehensive painting materials, acrylic painting with bold personality, different styles of calligraphy, exotic landscape paintings, fine brushwork figure painting highlighting the style and color of youth in the new era and so on.

Beijing Normal University is a well-known century-old university at home and abroad. The discipline of fine arts and calligraphy also has a long history of one hundred years. Calligraphy and painting masters such as Chen Shizeng, Wei Tianlin, Qigong and Wu Guanzhong have taught here and left a deep tradition.

Although fine arts and calligraphy have different ways of expression, in the history of Chinese art, the relationship between calligraphy and painting can be described as blended like milk and water -- in complete harmony. As Zhang Yanyuan of the Tang Dynasty said in the Records of Famous Paintings of Past Dynasties about the early calligraphy and painting , "calligraphy and painting are from an organic whole", and as Zhao Mengfu, a great calligraphy master of the Yuan Dynasty, integrated calligraphy into painting, literati and painters advocated the integration and  uniformity of calligraphy and painting.

From the notion of the development of fine arts and calligraphy in BNU, the two disciplines have great similarities. The art discipline encourages an open academic atmosphere, advocates the "traveling" teaching mode, and pays attention to both professional theory and creative skills. Calligraphy is committed to cultivating professionals with both political integrity and talent, high cultural quality, strong professional ability, exploration spirit and aesthetic quality. With the creation and display of this exhibition, the art and calligraphy disciplines of BNU will continue to go hand in hand and contribute to the development of China's aesthetic education.
