Secretary Liu Attended the International Symposium on Overseas Communication of Chinese Literature and Addressed

On the morning of April 28, the "International Symposium on Overseas Communication of Chinese Literature" was ceremoniously opened in the auditorium on the third floor of the new library at BNU. It is co-organized by the China National Office for Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language (NOCFL), School of Arts of BNU, School of Arts and Sciences of University of Oklahoma, "Contemporary World Literature" magazine, "Chinese Literature Today" magazine and others. BNU Party Committee Secretary Liu Chuansheng attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Participants in the meeting include Zhao Shaohua, the deputy minister of Ministry of Culture, Ma Jianfei, deputy director of NOCFL, the vice-president of the University of Oklahoma, the chairman of the Confucius Institute, and Bo Wenli (Paul Bell), Dean of School of Arts and Sciences.

On behalf of BNU, Secretary Liu expressed the warmest welcome to the domestic and foreign experts and scholars, writers, and poets and thanked them for coming to the meeting. Secretary Liu said in his speech:"Beijing Normal University is the first Normal University in the history of China, and is the center of the spread of modern Chinese culture." The School of Chinese Literature, together with the University of Oklahoma in the United States, based on the platform of the Confucius Institute, are together devoted to promoting the heritage of Chinese culture and China-foreign cultural exchange, and a deep and enduring partnership has been established. In 2008, the two sides held a successful "International Symposium on Contemporary World Literature and China," founded a Chinese version of "Contemporary World Literature," which caused a tremendous reverberation. In 2010, the two sides started the implementation of the "Chinese Literature Overseas Transmission Project," formally established the "Research Center of Chinese Literature Overseas Communication," marking a new stage of the cooperation between the two universities.

Secretary Liu stressed that holding this seminar is a major sign of deepening cooperation between the University of Oklahoma and BNU, but also a big move to enhance the international level of BNU. Characterized by being inter-ethnic, cross-cultural, and interdisciplinary, this academic conference aims to discuss deeply the globalization horizon of the study of Chinese literature, to provide a platform for Chinese and foreign authors to dialogue with the world, to strengthen exchanges between Chinese and foreign literature, and to enhance the international influence of Chinese literature.

After the opening ceremony, delegates had a broad and deep discussion on the topic of “Overseas Communication of Chinese Literature - History, Present and Future," and wonderful speeches were made by Chinese and foreign famous experts and scholars including Qing-Bing Tong, Mo Yan, Mary Rae Armantrout, Duoduo, and Ximi.

The conference lasted for three days. More than 180 experts, scholars, writers, and poets from over eleven countries including the United States, Japan, and Korea, among others, discussed the topic of "Overseas Communication of Chinese Literature - History, Present and Future," presented their thoughts about the creation and study of Chinese literature, talked about the expectations for Chinese literary translation, analyzed the opportunities and challenges faced by the spread of Chinese literature in the global context, and described the prospects of the overseas spread of Chinese literature.
