Party Secretary Liu Attends and Addresses at the 3rd Meeting of BNU Global Institute Scientific Steering Committee and the International Symposium on Global Change

On the morning of April 25, the 3rd meeting of Scientific Steering Committee of BNU Science and Research Institute of Global Change and Earth System and the International Symposium on Global Change took place at Beijing Normal University. Many famous scholars attended the meeting including academician Xu Guanhua, director of the institute’s scientific steering committee, Professor Chen Jingming from The Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada, deputy director of the committee, academician Fu Congbin, professor Guan Peng from Qinghua University and other members of the Scientific Steering Committee including academician An Zhisheng, academician Li Xiaowen, academician Su Jilan, academician Xu Jianmin, academican Zeng Qingcun, Professor Richard Norgaard from the University of California, Professor Peng Changhui from the University of Quebec, Professor Masahide Kimoto from the University of Tokyo, and chief scientist Taroh Matsuno of the Marine Research and Development Institution of MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology). BNU Party Secretary Liu Chuansheng, director-general of the Institute Council attended and addressed the meeting. Managing Vice President Shi Peijun, executive director of the Institute Council, presided over the opening ceremony.

On behalf of the school, Party Secretary Liu extended a warm welcome to the guests and scholars. He thanked all the experts for their hard work in the past year and congratulated them on the fruitful achievements of the Institute in the past year. Liu said that in today’s world, environmental pollution and ecological damage has greatly threatened human’s social and economic development. Innovative research and joint efforts on the key issues of global change will help not only to cope with this challenge and protect our earth, but also to achieve the common goal of sustainable development of China and the world as a whole. BNU has strengthened the construction of disciplines related to global change, and the university has already become an important teaching and research base. BNU has taken full advantage of its subjects and integrated its resources to establish the first Science and Research Institute of Global Change and Earth System among China’s universities. In two years’ time, under the leadership of academician Xu Guanhua, the Institute has continually made innovations of its system and mechanism, giving full play to the interdisciplinary, open, and innovative research platform, actively undertaking a series of projects such as a major national scientific research plan on global change. The Institute has made many achievements in scientific research and has produced substantial influence at home and abroad.

Secretary Liu said that this annual Scientific Steering Committee Meeting and International Symposium has provided a new opportunity and set up a new platform for the development of global change and earth system. Our university will continuously support the development of our research institute. Secretary Liu expected all the experts in this meeting to fully exchange their ideas on the frontline problems concerning global change and on major issues involving social and economic development so as to make a positive contribution to improving China’s international influence on the research of global change and increasing human beings’ ability to deal with global climate change.

On behalf of the BNU Global Institute Scientific Steering Committee, Academician Xu Guanhua thanked all the leaders and experts for their attendance and introduced the work done by Chinese scientific and technological circles and the Institute of Global Change in the past year. He raised high expectations of the development of the Institute.

This meeting lasted for three days. Committee members will assess and supervise the work done by the Institute in the past year and give suggestions for its future development. During the symposium, over seventy experts and scholars from all over the world held heated discussion of the frontline issues in the field of global change. This meeting will definitely promote cooperation and exchange between BNU’s relevant disciplines and institutes of global change at home and abroad.
