From May 9th to 15th, Prof. Cheng Xiao and Associate Professor Chen Zhuoqi of Beijing Normal University's Frontier Science Center for Polar Environment and Climate Change were invited to visit Norway and Denmark. In Norway, Cheng Xiao and Chen Zhuoqi visited the Norwegian Polar Research Institute, KSAT Satellite Service Company and Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center. In Denmark, they visited the Copenhagen Investment Agency, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Danish Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Green Kingdom, and had discussions with researchers from the Danish Meteorological Institute and the Danish University of Science and Technology.
Norway and Denmark are located within the Arctic Circle. Polar studies, especially Arctic science research, occupy a leading position in the world. The visit has made important progress. The relevant institutions have shown great interest in the research of polar regions and climate change of Beijing Normal University and the China University Polar Joint Research Center composed of 29 colleges and universities. The Danish side confirmed that in October 2018 “The first Sino-Danish Arctic Research Forum” will be held in Copenhagen, and Norway initially decided to hold the Sino-Norwegian Arctic Research Forum in early 2019.
Beijing Normal University, as the lead unit of the China University Joint Research Centre of Polarity (UCPR), is a window of cooperation between Chinese universities and the Arctic countries. The main purpose of this visit is to further promote the Arctic research cooperation between Chinese universities and the polar research institutes in these two countries. In January 2018, China issued a white paper on the Arctic Policy. Our BNU established the "Frontier Science Center for Polar Environment and Climate Change" and the "China University Polar Joint Research Center" in April. It is currently playing a Leadership role in China's polar science and frontier scientific research.
