Recently, Prof. Zhu Lihang from our School of Statistics was invited by the Statistical Association of South Africa to attend the South African 2017 Statistical Annual Meeting held in Bloemfontein on November 27-30 as an official guest. At the annual meeting, Professor Zhu Lihang opened a one-day short course for South African statisticians and made a report on the conference. Since then, Professor Zhu Lihang also went to North West University in South Africa and Pretoria University conducted an academic exchange.
As early as 1953, the Statistical Society of South Africa was established. Each year, one to two internationally renowned scholars are invited to attend and report on the conference. Professor Zhu Lihang is currently the first Chinese (including Hong Kong, Maucao, Taiwan) statistician invited. South Africa Northwestern University and Pretoria University are both well-known South African universities. The University of Pretoria, Department of Statistics was formally established in 1938, and is the South Africa's earliest department of statistics. Professor Zhu Lihang's visit not only further expanded our school's reputation and influence in the field of international statistics, but also facilitated the exchange and understanding among the statistical community in China and South Africa.
