On November 10, 2018, Chaired by Professor Xiao Cunde, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Surface Process and Resource Ecology, Beijing Normal University, jointly participated by the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environmental Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Wuhan University, Nanjing University, Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Key R&D Program “Marine Environmental Safety Guarantee” project “Greenland Ice Sheet Monitoring, Simulation and Climate Impact Study” project kick-off meeting and implementation plan seminar were Held in Beijing. Qin Dahe Academician, Natural Resources Ministry (State Oceanic Administration) Polar Investigation Office Qin Weijia, Qinghai Normal University President Shi Peijun, China Meteorological Administration Zhai Panmao Researcher, Chinese Academy of Sciences Qinghai Plateau Research Institute researcher Li Xin, Shanghai Normal University Professor Wen Jiahong, Professor Chen Xianyao from China Ocean University, project responsibility specialist Yu Yongqiang, researcher at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Zhao Yue, researcher at the Institute of Geomechanics, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, were invited to attend the conference and conduct scientific consultation on the research content and implementation plan of the project. The leaders of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Beijing Normal University and other competent departments came to the guidance. More than 40 people, including project team members and graduate students, attended the meeting.
The project is the first major project in China to conduct research on the Greenland ice sheet. The main research task of the project is to establish a comprehensive star-machine-ground integrated observation system for the ice sheet “overflow glacier-sea ice” ice flow system in Greenland, laying the foundation for long-term monitoring and international cooperation in Greenland; The dynamic mechanism of the change of the material balance of the ice sheet, the uncertainty of the prediction of sea level change is reduced; the mechanism of sea ice change around the ice sheet is revealed, and the forecasting and forecasting work is carried out to provide scientific and technological reserves for the “Ice Silk Road”. The project has set up four topics: 1) high-resolution field observation of the typical ice-flow system in Greenland; 2) remote sensing enhanced observation of the key processes of the “ice cover-overflow glaciers-sea ice” system in Greenland; 3) the mechanism of sea ice change around Greenland and Its prediction study; 4) Greenland ice sheet and surface material balance evolution and its impact on sea level.
The opening ceremony of the conference was presided over by the project's chief scientist, Professor Xiao Cunde. He first gave a brief introduction to the leaders, experts and project members. Subsequently, Prof. Wang Wentao, the leader of the 21st Century Agenda Center, spoke about the management requirements of key R&D projects and hoped that the project would support decision-making. Qin Weijia, Director of the Polar Office of the Ministry of Natural Resources (State Oceanic Administration), affirmed the overall layout of the project and congratulated the project. Professor Wang Kaicun, deputy dean of the Research Institute of Beijing Normal University, and Professor Wu Jianjun, deputy director of the Faculty of Geography, respectively, spoke on behalf of the school and the department, and expressed their strong support for the implementation of the project.
After the unanimous agreement of the participating experts, the academician Qin Dahe was selected as the leader of the project expert group, and the discussion on project implementation plan was presided over by the academician Qin. The project's chief scientist, Professor Xiao Cunde, reported on the project's setting up background, the key scientific issues to be solved, the main research content, the overall idea of the implementation plan, the research basis and team of the project implementation, and the expected results of the project. The person in charge of each sub project reported on the specific implementation plan of each topic. The expert group of the academician Qin Dahe fully affirmed the implementation plan of the project, and put forward guiding opinions and suggestions on how to meet the major needs of the country and solve key scientific problems. It is hoped that the research focus and breakthrough will be achieved. The experts also put forward constructive comments and suggestions on the project from the aspects of research content, implementation plan and application of results. Finally, Prof. Xiao Cunde organized various project leaders and core project leaders to conduct in-depth discussions on the suggestions and opinions put forward by the experts, and further clarified the tasks of each topic.
Through this meeting, we have deepened our understanding of the project and the tasks, objectives and implementation plans; further clarified the next steps; laid a good foundation for the smooth implementation of the project and the research topic.
