[Honour] Bai Xuemei, Visiting Professor of Beijing Normal University, won the Volvo Environment Award of 2018

Visiting Professor of Beijing Normal University, Member of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Surface Process and Resource Ecology, Professor Bai Xuemei of the Australian National University won the Volvo Environment Award of 2018. Professor Bai Xuemei has long-term cooperation with the State Key Laboratory of Surface Process and Resource Ecology, presided over the laboratory open project, and achieved innovative collaborative research results in China's rapid urbanization and its environmental effects, and published the results in academic journals such as Nature.

 


 

Cities play an important role in influencing and possibly addressing current sustainability challenges. Professor Bai Xuemei is one of the most active thought leaders in the world in the field of urban sustainable research. She focuses on urban development in East Asia and addresses theoretical and applied challenges across different scales. She leads interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary research, focusing on the understanding of society, the complexity of ecological and economic drivers, the impact of urbanization, and the sustainable transition of science and policy to cities. She and her co-authors have creatively proposed the concept of urban sustainability experimentation, which has great potential for changing the status quo. Most of Professor Bai Xuemei's research has clear policy implications. From identifying and testing local solutions to addressing broader national and global policy challenges, her research directly affects the promotion of solar energy in Rizhao City and sustainable development in western China. The development of urbanization strategies and the reconstruction of forests based on native tree species in Japanese mining areas. She has contributed to regional and international projects such as the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and Future Earth, particularly in leading the development of the Urban-Knowledge Action Network.

 

Professor Bai Xuemei's work is an excellent example of applying research to policy and practice. She is a well-deserved winner of the 2018 Volvo Environmental Awards.


 

Introduction to the award:

 

The Volvo Environmental Awards was established in 1988 and is now one of the most prestigious environmental awards in the world. The awards are presented annually and include awards, trophies and prizes of SEK 1.5 million to reward those with outstanding scientific discoveries in the field of environmental and sustainable development. The 2018 Volvo Environmental Awards ceremony will be held on November 28th in Stockholm, Sweden.
