On September 7-8, 2018, the Astronomy Department of Beijing Normal University held a 1.9-meter optical telescope seminar in the western suburbs of Beijing. Experts and scholars from the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Nanjing Astronomical Optical Technology Research Institute, the Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory, the Purple Mountain Observatory, the National Fund Committee, Peking University, Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology, Xiamen University, Nanjing Normal University, and Hebei Normal University attended the meeting.
At the meeting, the Department of Astronomy of Beijing Normal University introduced the scientific goals and construction background of the 1.9-meter optical telescope. The Nanjing Astronomical Optical Technology Institute introduced several preliminary design schemes for the 1.9-meter optical telescope. The Xinjiang Observatory introduced the candidate site of the telescope. The participating experts conducted in-depth discussions and sufficient arguments on the scientific objectives, optical design, mechanical systems, terminal instruments, candidate sites and funding sources of the telescope. The meeting agreed that this telescope promotes astronomy in many fields in China. Observing and researching, promoting astronomy education and personnel training in colleges and universities, and promoting the discipline construction of the astronomy department of Beijing Normal University are of great significance. All hope that Beijing Normal University can strongly support the establishment of this telescope and strive for cooperation with relevant units to promote the building of this telescope as soon as possible.
