The College of Chinese Language and Culture at Beijing Normal University is one of the first few ‘National centers for teaching Chinese as a foreign language’. It contributes significantly to the internationalization of the Beijing Normal University.

The College offers BA program in ‘Chinese Language Studies’, MA and Ph.D. programs in ‘Linguistics and Applied Linguistics’ and in ‘Chinese Language and Character Study’. It also shoulders the responsibility of teaching overseas students coming to China to study Chinese language and culture through long-term and short-term courses. The total number of all types of students in our college has been over 2000 per year. Thanks to its high-quality teaching and great reputation around the world, the BA program for international students in our college ranked first in 2007 among all universities in China.

The academic team at the College consists of 53 permanent members, including 8 professors (six of whom are qualified Ph.D. supervisors), and 18 associate professors. The College also has more than 100 qualified part-time teachers.

The College has a well-structured academic curriculum and management system. It also has well-equipped teaching and research facilities, including listening laboratories, audio-visual classrooms, resource rooms as well as multimedia equipments in all the classrooms, which have all helped to continuously improve our teaching quality and earned reputation for the College in the field.

Teacher training programs carry great weight in the College’s work. Its ‘Centre for Chinese Language Teacher Education’ is responsible for training hundreds of native and foreign teachers of Chinese as a foreign language every year, both at home and abroad.

The College plays an important part in promoting Chinese language throughout the world. It has established two Confucius Institutes with San Francisco State University (USA) and Manchester University (UK) respectively. It is also responsible for developing Chinese teaching materials for American AP courses. Besides, the College offers MA program in International Chinese Education for home students.

The College has formed close academic relationship with a number of overseas universities such as Princeton University, Dartmouth College, University of California, Kanazawa University, Osaka University of Foreign Studies, Meikai University, Kanagawa University, Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University etc.

Since the College started the program of teaching Chinese as a foreign language in 1965, over ten thousands non-degree program participants and hundreds of BA, MA and PhD students from all over the world have studied here. A large number of overseas Chinese language teachers have received professional training in here as well. These graduates and teachers have been playing important roles throughout the world in promoting economic development and culture-exchange between China and other countries. With the increase of China’s comprehensive national strength and the rising of its international position, the career of teaching Chinese as a foreign language is facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities. We endeavor to continue our success story and look forward to striving for new achievements in the future!
