From June 25 to June 30, 2016, the BNU School of Sociology held a summer camp in Beijing, an excellent university student "International Summer Academy."
In addition to students from China, this summer camp drew many outstanding university students: 66 students from sixty universities, including Cardiff University in Wales in Britain, and from schools in Pakistan, Poland and other countries. They gathered at BNU for a five-day international academic exchange and learning program.
The students were enthusiastic about registering for the International Summer Academy: more than 140 students from 89 universities signed up. They came from 24 provinces and autonomous regions, representing more than three-quarters of China’s provinces and autonomous regions (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan). Breaking past the limits of students being concentrated in the northern region and at liberal arts schools, here there were an increased proportion of outstanding students from the east and south China areas. Compared with past statistics, the applicants ability to use the English language has improved sharply, too: those passing the English CET6 test with high marks accounted for 85.8%; those passing the TEM-4 accounted for 2.8%; and those passing the IELTS and TOEFL accounted for 4.3%, among whom some scored above 7.0 (IELTS) and above 607 (TOEFL). The applicants’ level of ability in using the English language ensured communication and discussion that included Chinese and foreign students.
According to the academic performance of their majors, the applicants are also excellent, including 30 students ranking the first, 20 students ranking the second, 11 students ranking the third; the top three ranking’s proportion is 43.6%, the top five ranking’s proportion is 63.1%, and the top ten ranking’s proportion is 80.1%. This summer camp was favored by outstanding students majoring in sociology and professional learning, including sociology, social work, ethnology, philosophy, law, public management, public management, administrative management, the Chinese language and literature, human resource management, economics, history, education, labor and social security, special education, logistics management, journalism, English, the English language and literature, geography information science, political science and public administration, textile engineering, biotechnology and liberal arts, among others.
Through strict index appraisal (foreign language level, major ranking, undergraduate major, research ability, and comprehensive quality), a total of 66 China campers were screened.
This summer camp arranged rich and colorful activities for the members, including "ice-breaking" game parties, a Furen Campus visit, movie showing and career discussion, Chinese and foreign student dialogue, a series of professional academic lectures and group work, among others.
For the "ice-breaking" game parties (themed “Enjoy Summer and Meet at BNU”) Professor William Aled Jones from Cardiff University and three foreign students took part in a link game of meeting each other, interacting and sharing. This activity broke through the strangeness of a first meeting, eliminated embracing, established mutual trust and enabled students to make good friends. There was a warm atmosphere at the games and everybody fully enjoyed the experience, which laid a good foundation for the activities that followed.
The 2016 International Summer Academy Opening Ceremony was held in Yingdong Academic Hall. “The campers celebrated their entrance by walking on the red carpet,” followed by a Furen Campus visit, movie-themed discussion, Chinese and foreign students’ dialogue, and group discussion for which the campers had to lead the communication activities. There were ardent discussion and exchanges, one theme involving professional morality in social work, others dealing with globalization and localization, social responsibility social management, traditional culture, national autonomy, folk customs, and social policy. The campers freely expressed their views and exchanged ideas, harvesting a lot from the exercises.
Five series of high-level academic lectures, involving sociology, social work, anthropology, ethnology, social management and social policy, were described by the campers as brainstorming sessions and an academic feast. The wonderful lectures and discussion inspired the academic intentions of the campers and prompted their groups to participate. Consensus-based teamwork and excellent individual performance were fully in play.
Through these activities, the members obtained the rare experience and improvement from strangeness to "academic community", from strangers to friends, from study to research, and from listening to giving the lecture, accumulating expectation for graduate school life and their expectation for BNU and BNU School of Sociology. This process also provided an opportunity for the School of Sociology to observe each camper’s comprehensive ability and academic accomplishment, fully understand their respective characteristics, and selected "outstanding campers" and "excellent campers" on the basis of the tutor group’s careful discussion which was directly related to admission to postgraduate qualifications, preparing enough high quality students for 2017 admissions.
With “See you at BNU next year” “See you at the School of Sociology” and other blessings, 2016 "International Summer Academy" came to a successful ending.
