Postdoctoral Fellow of Beijing Normal University's School of Journalism and Communication has made significant progress in the study of emotional regulation. The research results that titled "Working Memory Training Improves Emotion Regulation Ability" were published on October 9, 2018 in the Scientific Reports, a journal under Nature (DOI: 10.1038/s41598-018-31495-2).



  Scientific Reports is a comprehensive online open access journal under the Nature Publishing Group that publishes original, scientific, and effective preliminary research in all areas of natural sciences and clinical sciences. The biggest difference between the Internet era and the traditional media era is that it is a multi-level, holographic communication that includes emotions, relationships and scenes, and these important factors involved in the communication are not only lack of attention in the traditional media era, but also no research results. This study on emotional regulation and people's cognitive psychology is an important progress in the study of Internet communication. In the era of Internet communication, people pay close attention to the improvement of emotion regulation ability, hoping to improve the emotional problems and obstacles in cognitive communication, and further improve people's experience satisfaction. Although there is a certain degree of understanding of the process of emotional regulation, it is not easy to find effective interventions to promote the ability of emotional regulation. Some researchers attempt to promote and enhance emotional regulation from the perspective of attention, which is due to the crucial role of attention control in the process of emotional regulation. It involves directly the individual's focus, selection and control of emotional information. In recent years, studies have also found that attention-based working memory and emotional regulation are closely related, and emotional regulation greatly depends on attention-based control. The improved working memory ability through training promotes the enhancement of attention control ability to a certain extent, and the enhancement of attention control ability further enhances the ability of emotion regulation. Various evidences indicate that the refreshing functional components of working memory may play an important role in the process of changing information representation, shifting the focus of attention and less attention to negative emotions.



In a previously published study, Professor Zhou Renlai's research group has found that working memory training methods play a significant role in promoting emotional regulation ("How Working Memory Training Improves Emotion Regulation Ability: Evidence from HRV(heart rate variability )", published in the international journal Physiology & Behavior), is expressed in the functional index of the autonomic nervous system, high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV). Since the training task used in this study is the active memory training paradigm, this is the first original study to compare the direction of pure refresh function training to improve the ability of emotional regulation.



On this basis, the researchers further examined the mechanism of this phenomenon. In this published study, they used Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) to examine the information processing process of individuals during emotional regulation, and to simultaneously examine the three functional components of the attention network: alertness, orientation. First, the amplitude of Late Positive Potentials (LPPs) of ERPs, which are the main indicators of mood regulation, showed a significant decline after 20 days of working memory training. The improvement of emotional adjustment ability; Secondly, attention to the directional function in the network has been significantly improved after training; Third, pay attention to the training increment of orientation function and the training increment of emotional subjective experience. Positive correlation: The stronger the orientation function, the more positive the subjective experience of emotions is. These results were cut in from the perspective of attention control, and initially answered the question "What aspects of emotional memory refreshing training improves emotional regulation and attention?"

The article further suggests that if an effective method of promoting attention control can be found, it is very likely to improve the individual's ability to regulate emotions, and hopefully further apply to mental-psychological related disorders closely related to emotional regulation. Such as substance abuse, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder. This has made a useful attempt to understand the relationship between attention function and emotional adjustment ability, and to some extent communicated the two areas of cognition and emotion, and crossed the boundary between the two.
